Welcome to 1981!

The Day is celebrating 100 years of news reporting and staff writer Stan DeCoster has written a reflective article on redevelopment for the paper‘s special edition. While the editorial staff had always been supportive of this program, I thought it would be interesting to share a newspaperman‘s perspective on the changes 10 years after.

To Stan‘s credit, the report strikes me as balanced in reflecting on the varied takes on what happened after that fateful spring referendum of 1962. Thank you, Stan!

Hammy‘s Restaurant was at #98 Main Street. Stephen Downey was part-owner and tended bar. When the owl story comes to light, I will update this posting.

Another newspaperman who spent time at Hammy‘s was John Foley. As with Stan, both were people persons and it was a pleasure to read their insightful observations that filled a void left by the he said - she said reporting that was the natural trend in what we read.

John‘s article, also dealing with forced change, came under the title The Workplace and dealt with the cost and convenience of highway bridges over the previous 100 years. Enjoy.
